Humphreys Middle School 6th grade science students receive hands on training about EOD equipment.

CAMP HUMPHREYS, SOUTH KOREA – Sixth grade science students at Humphreys Middle School experienced science in action during a dynamic, hands-on visit from the 718th Ordnance Company (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), organized by science teacher Ms. Melody Gersper, May 21–22, 2025.

As part of a four-week unit on Newton’s Laws of Motion, students had been learning how forces influence movement. The visit from the EOD team brought those lessons into the real world through exciting demonstrations and interactive learning stations. With guidance from trained professionals, students operated the MTRS robot, suited up in bomb gear, x-rayed various items, explored EOD training tools, and aimed the powerful Titan Disruptor.

Each activity connected directly to a scientific principle the students had studied in class.

Newton’s First Law of Motion came to life as students used the robot to manipulate a golf ball in attempts to knock over a water bottle. Whether dropping the ball or ramming the bottle while holding it, students saw firsthand how objects at rest stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force.

Newton’s Second Law of Motion was explored through the bomb suit’s heavy mass. Students discovered how the suit’s weight lessens the acceleration of the wearer, helping protect them from explosive forces by absorbing and redistributing impact energy.

Newton’s Third Law of Motion was dramatically illustrated with the Titan Disruptor. When fired, the force of the water blast was met with an equal and opposite recoil—offering a clear, memorable demonstration of action and reaction.

In addition to the science, students gained insight into the essential mission of the 718th Ordnance Company. These highly trained professionals work to protect people and property by responding to explosive threats, including Unexploded Ordnance (UXO), Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) hazards. Their work spans both peacetime and combat operations and includes support for the U.S. Secret Service and Department of State during VIP missions.

The visit was not only educational but also inspiring, giving students a glimpse into the dedication, skill, and courage required in the EOD field.

A heartfelt thank-you to the 718th Ordnance Company for making science meaningful, memorable, and truly explosive!
