Humphreys Middle School gears up for Pacific Reading Battle
CAMP HUMPHREYS – Humphreys Middle School's 5th grade Fire and Ice homeroom teams recently faced off in a spirited pre-Reading Battle, setting the stage for the annual Pacific West and South Reading Battle on April 11, 2025.
This year, DoDEA Pacific West and South fourth and fifth grade students from Humphreys Middle School, Humphreys West Elementary, Humphreys Central Elementary, Daegu Elementary School, Osan Elementary School, McCool Elementary (Guam), Andersen Elementary (Guam), and Bob Hope Elementary School (Okinawa) will compete in the reading battle.
Our HMS 5th graders are gearing up for this event by focusing on five titles out of the ten selected by the information specialists from the participating schools. This internal competition not only hones their skills but also builds anticipation for the big day and encourages everyone to read these awesome titles. All HMS 5th graders (11 classes) had a chance to participate in the first elimination round. Mrs. Shin, HMS Information Specialist, then took the top contenders through the second and third (final) elimination rounds. This year’s winning team is Fire, consisting of Mr. Koch, Ms. Cepeda, Ms. Martens, Ms. McCluskey, and Ms. Pepitone’s classes. It was a very close call with only 0.12 points difference.
“It was also nice to see how they support one another and cheer one another on,” said HMS Assistant Principal Ms. Pilon, while observing the elimination.
HMS Phoenix readers have been diligently reading the five titles and writing reviews to post in their hallway. Each review earns them an entry into a drawing for five one-hour coupons, allowing them to read on their own with their teacher’s permission in the Phoenix Information Center. Humphreys Middle School Phoenix Readers look forward to continuing our winning streak this year.
