CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – Humphreys Middle School held a meaningful Memorial Day Observance in May 2026 at the school auditorium, bringing together students, staff, and guests to honor the sacrifices of America’s fallen service members. The ceremony reflected respect, patriotism, and remembrance through student leadership and musical performances.

Students from the fifth through eighth grades served as Masters and Mistresses of Ceremony, guiding attendees through a program focused on honoring those who gave their lives in military service. Assistant Principals Ms. Natayla Cho and Ms. Dawn Pilon delivered opening and closing remarks, emphasizing the importance of remembering the nation’s heroes.

The program began with the presentation of colors by four members of Humphreys High School Junior ROTC under the leadership of Mr. Tyrone Powers. The Humphreys Middle School 5th Grade Choir, directed by Ms. Ji Yea Yoon, performed both the United States National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and the Korean National Anthem.

Students also shared the history of Memorial Day, tracing its origins from post-Civil War commemorations to its establishment as a national holiday in 1971 honoring Americans who died in military service.

The choir continued the observance with heartfelt performances of “God Bless America” and “My Country, ’Tis of Thee.” A moving reading of John McCrae’s historic poem In Flanders Fields reminded attendees of the lasting sacrifices made by service members throughout history.

The ceremony concluded with all attendees standing for the playing of Taps, creating a solemn moment of reflection and gratitude.

Special recognition was given to Humphreys Middle School Administrative Officer Mr. Michael Robinson for coordinating the event, along with appreciation extended to Humphreys High School Junior ROTC, the fifth-grade choir, student volunteers, and all participants whose contributions made the observance a memorable tribute to service and sacrifice.
