CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — Students from Humphreys Middle School observed Mental Health Awareness Month in May by participating in a community event promoting awareness and access to support resources.

The event, held under the theme “Check and Connect,” was led by the Rho Nu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and brought together students, parents and community members from across the installation.

Participants had the opportunity to learn about mental health resources and strategies for maintaining positive well-being. Students took part in stress management activities, while parents and other adults connected with school counselors, school psychologists and counselors with Military and Family Life Counseling Program who provide services within DoWEA schools.

Humphreys Middle School students contributed to the program by sharing their perspectives on how important communication and support are to mental health.

“Relationships matter, and every student needs to know they have someone to turn to when they need it,” said eighth-grade student J.

During the event, Alexandra Harris, Child and Youth Services director at the Gilliland School Age Center, highlighted the importance of extracurricular programs in supporting youth development and engagement.

Representatives from the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate provided information on available legal resources, and additional installation and community organizations participated in support of the event.

Dr. Shanta Mayes, Instructional Systems Specialist for Secondary Social Studies, led participants in a mental well-being pledge, encouraging continued awareness and action across the community.

Participants read the pledge aloud:

“I pledge to help make mental health well-being a reality for everyone, everywhere by: staying informed about the latest in mental health and substance use care; committing to self-care; building my knowledge and skills so I can better help others."

The program concluded with a community walk focused on mental well-being.
