Secondary Mathematics Parent University Hosted at Pacific West USAG Humphreys
Ms. Schwerdt-Johnson, Principal of Humphreys High School, and Mr. Chad Struhs, Principal of Humphreys Middle School, hosted a Secondary Math Parent University evening event on January 18, 2024, in the Media Center at Humphreys High School. Parents, teachers, guidance counselors, school administrators, and Pacific West district leaders attended this event to learn more about DoDEA’s adopted curriculum resources and how to support students’ success with secondary mathematics.
“Together, we navigated the exciting terrain of Carnegie Learning, unlocking a world of possibilities for our students,” Humphreys High School Principal Amanda Schwerdt-Johnson said, explaining that the event was a collaboration with Humphreys Middle School and parents. “The shared enthusiasm and engagement showcased the vibrant partnership that fuels our collective commitment to empowering every child with the tools for mathematical mastery.”
The event's purpose was to dig deeper into understanding how the new secondary math adopted resources shifts the way we think about learning mathematics. Stakeholders experienced how the students use the blended learning model of collaboration and technology-based personalized learning.
"Parent University, Math 6-12, created the perfect opportunity for all parties, parents, teachers, school administrators, district leadership, etc., to show up in support of our students,” said DoDEA parent Carolyn Pickering. “By making the investment in this hour of time, I learned so much and was able to immediately apply the information to homework that night with my child. There are so many resources highlighted in Carnegie Learning, such as the Family Guide, Live Hints, supporting Videos, and more! I am looking forward to future Parent University sessions."
The presentation was facilitated and supported by the following Pacific West District ISSs: Denise Hudson, Professional Learning, Darleen Rozzi, Education Technology, and Bettina Bennet, ELA/Social Studies.
Stakeholders engaged with the learning by watching several videos and screencasts. Several QR codes provided audience members with quick access to exploring Carnegie Learning’s many student and family resources. The evening wrapped up with a Q&A session with stakeholders.
“It was great to see the turnout of parents interested in the Math curriculum and participating in the Secondary Math Parent University,” said Chad Struhs, Humphreys Middle School principal. “It has created enriching discussions with parents and helped them better understand the tools available to them and their students. It created positive outcomes with our partnerships with parents, students and staff.”
