CAMP HUMPHREYS — Excitement filled the air at Humphreys Middle School (HMS) on Friday, May 30, 2025, as students gathered on the school's softball field to witness a rare and thrilling sight: two U.S. Army helicopters landing right before their eyes.
Thanks to the coordination efforts of 5th grade teacher Ms. Alexandria Pepitone and her husband, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Brett Pepitone, G2, 8th Army Requirements Manager and GEOINT Functional Manager, this Army Helicopter Static Display was brought to the heart of the school, providing students with a unique opportunity to connect with the U.S. Army mission and equipment up close.
The display featured two of the Army’s most iconic aircraft, the AH-64 Apache and CH-47 Chinook helicopters, which touched down on the HMS softball field to the amazement of more than 700 HMS students in grades 5-8 and more than 100 visiting second graders from Humphreys West Elementary School (HWES). Subject matter experts were on hand to answer questions, explain the role of the helicopters, and highlight the various aspects of Army aviation and operations.
The highlight of the day was the opportunity for students to step inside the aircraft, sit in the cockpits, and explore the interiors. The excitement was evident as students eagerly lined up to get a firsthand look and pose for photos with the helicopters.
The event served as both an educational and inspirational experience, encouraging students to engage with real-world applications of STEM, aviation, and military service.
The staff and students of Humphreys Middle School extended a heartfelt thank you to Ms. Alexander Pepitone, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Brett Pepitone, Commander CH-47F B CO 3-2 GSAB Captain Will Marshall, Commander AH-64E A CO 4-2 AB Captain George Lasley, the aircrew staff for the Apache and Chinook Helicopters, for making the event possible.
